Baked, blended, frozen or cooked – there’s plenty of delicious ways to use up the leftover natural yoghurt in your fridge!
1. Mash magic
For a creamy side dish without the saturated fat, swap butter for yoghurt in your next batch of mashed potato. For a flavour hit, add chopped, cooked garlic or fresh herbs – we like dill or chives.
2. Dress down
Enjoy creamy dressing without weight gain by diluting mayo with a little yoghurt for the same taste and texture, but less fat and kJs.
3. Dip into it
Puree yoghurt with chickpeas or cannellini beans and fresh herbs for a low-kJ dip that’s high in fibre, calcium, protein and taste. Served with crudités, it’s cheap, easy and ready in seconds.
4. Brekkie surprise
Bump up your calcium with brekkie – mix Greek yoghurt with fruit, honey and cinnamon and spread thickly on hot toast. Yoghurt too watery? Line a sieve with a clean Chux cloth, place over a bowl and spoon yoghurt into the sieve. Refrigerate overnight and excess liquid will drain off, leaving you with a thicker yoghurt that’ll keep for a week. Easy!
5. Icy treat
Blend with your favourite fruit and freeze in ice-block moulds for a refreshing summer snack.
6. Curry favour
In your next curry or stroganoff, switch the sour cream for yoghurt. Mix a tablespoon of flour with the yoghurt and add at the last minute. Gently heat, without boiling. Serve.
7. Muesli makeover
Reduce the sugar in your next bircher muesli by soaking oats in yoghurt instead of apple juice. Mix muesli with yoghurt, cover and refrigerate overnight. Serve with grated apple and fresh berries.
8. Power snack
For a snack high in protein and fibre, blend yoghurt with silken tofu, then stir in passionfruit pulp. Eat as is, or serve with fruit salad.
9. Icing on the cake
Replace cream cheese icing with a healthier mix of yoghurt, honey and ricotta.
10. Great garnish
Add a dollop of yoghurt instead of using cream, sour cream or crème fraîche as a garnish. Still got leftovers? Stir chopped cucumber and mint through yoghurt for a healthy dip or the perfect side dish to Indian curries.
