Q: “I’d like to lose about 8kg and have a moderately active lifestyle. How many kilojoules should I eat per day, and why do different sources suggest such different kilojoules to aim for?”

A: APD Maddison Fox responds:
“Your daily energy needs depend on your age, sex, body size and physical activity levels. The heavier you are and the more physical activity you do, the more kilojoules you need. For moderately active women wishing to lose weight, around 6300 kilojoules (or 1500 calories) per day is usually recommended. However, there is no ‘one-size fits all’ approach to weight loss, which is why you have found inconsistencies in your research. It’s also important to remember counting kilojoules shouldn’t be the only consideration in a weight loss plan.
There are other factors that can impact weight loss, such as stress levels, metabolism, hormones and sleep, which may need to be considered. Try visiting an Accredited Practising Dietitian, who will tailor a specific plan for you.”
