We’ve seen some crazy health food fads over the past year. Kale can be transformed into anything from smoothies to chips, and paleo bone broth is taking over plain old tea at your local health food cafe. So what could possibly be next? Here’s a sneak peek at some of the new food trends coming in 2016…
Fermented foods If you haven’t heard of kimchi and sauerkraut (both fermented vegetables), it’s time to pay attention. Research supports the health benefits of the tummy-friendly probiotics in fermented foods. Readily available DIY kits make it even easier for you.
Savoury porridge Poached eggs, kale and even pumpkin are set to replace sweet toppings like banana, berries and cinnamon on your morning oats. We can’t wait to try them!
Tea for kids Keep your eyes peeled for fruity tea flavours like watermelon and strawberry made from caffeine-free rooibos. As long as they aren’t loaded with sugar, they’re a refreshingly healthy alternative to soft drink and fruit juice.
Heat and spice Hot flavours such as wasabi and sriracha are set to become mainstream. The good news? More spice means you’ll probably use less salt on your food.
Plant-based waters Move over coconut water, banana water is making waves as the new potassium-rich way to hydrate. Or, you could just drink water — cheap, simple, effective!
Cake-topped drinks Red velvet smoothies? Nutella doughnut milkshakes? Topping a kilojoule-rich drink with wicked cakes is a fast way to supersize your waistline.
Free-from The expanding range of gluten-free, dairy-free and other free-from products offer people with allergies choices like never before. But if you don’t have a food intolerance, beware jumping on the bandwagon as you may be eliminating vital nutrients.
Frankenfood Meat-pie stuffed pizzas, cronut burgers and Vegemite chocolate were just a few of the crazy combos we saw in 2015. We’re genuinely scared to see what’s coming up next!
