As much as I love food, I also have a soft spot for science. At HFG, we are lucky to have a very talented team of experts on our advisory board who are on the pulse with the latest in the world of nutrition. And one exciting, new discovery is the gut microbiome.
If you have never heard of it, here’s what you need to know. Inside our digestive tract are millions of live bacteria, viruses and microbes living as an ecosystem, just like the plants, animals and insects in a rainforest. This is called the gut microbiome, and from the moment we are born, everything we swallow influences what kind of microbes live in this ecosystem. This includes food, drink, medications such as antibiotics, even dirt! The unique blend of bacteria in our gut is as individual as our fingerprints. Not even identical twins share the same gut microbiome.
This ecosystem of bacteria and bugs that live in our gut is leading the way for research on our mood, immune system and even why some of us struggle to lose weight. And diet plays a big role. A recent study revealed that switching from a highly processed, meat-heavy diet to a high-fibre diet saw a positive change in gut microbes in just two weeks.
